Welcome

Mrs. Beattie’s 8th Grade English

As usual, this year’s English class will be concentrating on reading and writing.  With the addition of three new novel units, the 8th grade students will have their minds full of the written word.   These novel units, combined with the Literature text and Accelerated Reading, give us a great opportunity to align the curriculum with the Michigan benchmarks for both reading and writing.

Along with the text and novels, the students will be writing their autobiography.  They will be given a new chapter each month.  Stay tuned, as they will need your help to complete this and they’ll be asking you to write a chapter also!

Be sure to watch for small homework assignments given each week that will need to be signed by you!

Something the Eighth Grade team would like the students to focus on this year is getting their work handed in on time.  As we are transitioning the students for High School, we have developed a late work policy that will be a part of the classroom norms the students developed. Students will not receive full credit for late work.  We will accept late work only until the following Monday after the assignment is given.

If your child is absent, they need to see me the day they return to school about getting their missing work.  They will have one day for every day they are absent to make up their work without penalty.  After that, the late policy goes into effect.

To keep up on what’s happening in English, read the blog on this website.  I’ll try and update it whenever anything new is happening.

Finally, grade codes on powerschool are as follows:  NTI = not turned in, INC = incomplete, EX = excused, AB = absent, and SM = see me.  The NTI’s, INC’s, and SM’s count as a “0” in the gradebook and the AB’s and EX’s are excused assignments and don’t count against the student’s grade.
