Mr. Larry Bruce
As educators, we are models of lifelong learning to our students and all those around us. In my pursuit of further education I have selected the Master’s program offered through Michigan State University in Technology in Education.
In my education, the technology I was exposed to was minimal and was out of date then. The problem now is that technology in the classroom has not progressed at nearly the rate as it has in private markets.
A possible reason for this is resistant teachers who do not have the time or resources to explore and pursue it to the extent necessary to incorporate it into classroom use and integrate it into their curriculum.
Another factor is change. Why change is so feared in education and in classrooms creates concern about the future of education. Ironically, the change necessary to successfully promote technology in education would be cataclysmal.
Although a step in the right direction, change within each classroom, one at a time, is not enough. Teachers must educate teachers in order to create the required change.
Education is not doomed to outdated pedagogy. We are currently experiencing radical change. Traditional forms of teaching are being replaced by best practice; objective based and authentic assessments, project-based learning, connections to the real world, etc.
Through the achievement of my Master’s Degree in Educational Technology, I hope to attain the ability to precipitate change. Future generations rely on our ability to educate them. We cannot sufficiently do so without the proper use of technology.
Students are becoming increasingly aware how to use technology through improper channels. Therefore, through our lack of proper technology use and education of how to use it to learn and expand our knowledge, we are enabling the very thing we are trying to curb. Or, rather, we are limiting our ability to teach because our students are not taught how to use technology to improve their own education.
