English 9

The English Curriculum has seen many changes this new school year!  The changes are a result of a new standardized test that the students take as Juniors.  The test is the ACT/MME with Writing.  The new changes for 9th grade can be found on my syllabus by clicking the link to the left.  For a more detailed explanation, you can check out the Michigan Department of Education website.

English 9 is a survey course and we cover 5 major units.  The units are:

Short Stories

Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet)

Personal Narrative (Catcher in the Rye)

Historical Fiction (To Kill a Mockingbird)

Epic Poem (The Odyssey)

This class will have a big focus on reading comprehension and writing.  The class will have a theme on the essential questions of “Who am I?”  and “How do I fit into the world around me?”  I will be challenging my students to work hard and strive to always do better.  I want them to take charge of their education and to continually want to know more and do more.

“We are very near to greatness: one step and we are safe: can we not take the leap?” (Emerson)
